English at Camp Yojoa
Camp Yojoa is English speaking only for all of our activities and electives, however we do recognise that the English level of our campers will vary and that some will need more support than others with their English abilities. The structure of our day ensures that campers have lots of opportunity to speak English in cabins, during electives and at mealtimes.
Our staff are there to ensure campers are using their English and pushing themselves to improve their abilities.
After many years of teaching English as a second language, we understand the benefits of creating, developing and delivering high quality English lessons. We put a strong emphasis on English speaking at our summer camp both in and out of the electives. We believe that by having an immersive English elective our campers always have a unique opportunity to practice and improve their understanding of the language during camp. Our English elective is not compulsory but recommended for our campers that need to improve their English level.
Campers will be put into three groups; beginner, intermediate and advanced based on parent/guardian recommendation and an assessment completed by our English teachers on the first day of the elective. The lessons focus mainly on speaking with some parts of the lessons focusing on reading and writing. We want to improve campers’ technical skills but also their confidence and understanding of the language.
The English elective is taught by EFL qualified professionals and PGCE/PGDE qualified teachers that work together to plan and teach various lessons at different levels that are catered towards the campers’ abilities. Our English teachers understand that not all campers will work at the same level and throughout the elective will be provided 1 to 1 support to make sure each camper is gaining something from the lessons.
Our English teachers will work together and utilize their different teaching experiences to create a positive, interactive and fun learning environment for our campers.
